It's typically nestled in rocky or sandy soils and can thrive in open woodlands and grasslands. Its rarity is due to its slow growth and the specialized habitat it requires.

This plant needs a sunny spot but should be protected from intense heat on the caudex. It's planted with the caudex above a mix of cactus and potting soil for better drainage. Water it weekly during its active growth period, then hold off watering completely when it rests to avoid rot. It’s important to maintain temperatures above 10° C (50° F) year-round.
