Ipomoea bolusiana, an interesting caudiciform succulent, finds its roots in the semi-arid regions of southern Africa and Madagascar. It's typically nestled in rocky or sandy soils and can thrive in open woodlands and grasslands. Its rarity is due to its slow growth and the specialized habitat it requires.
This plant needs a sunny spot but should be protected from intense heat on the caudex. It's planted with the caudex above a mix of cactus and potting soil for better drainage. Water it weekly during its active growth period, then hold off watering completely when it rests to avoid rot. It’s important to maintain temperatures above 10° C (50° F) year-round.
Ipomoea bolusiana stands out with its thick, tuberous base and delicate, vining stems. During its growing season from October to March, it produces enchanting white to pale pink flowers. The tuber is traditionally edible in native areas, providing cultural significance. Collectors admire its sculptural caudex and trailing beauty, though it often gets confused with its cousin, Ipomoea holubii. The plant's rarity and unique requirements make it a treasure for succulent enthusiasts.
