Euphorbia viguieri var. vilanandrensis is native to the unique landscapes of northern and central Madagascar. It's a rare species, sought after by collectors due to its limited geographic range and specific habitat preferences. Its natural home in the seasonally dry tropics is a hotspot for biodiversity.
This succulent loves bright to full sun exposure. It thrives in well-draining, gritty soil. Think of soil packed with coarse sand, pumice, or perlite to keep roots healthy. Water it deeply but infrequently. Let the soil dry out completely before watering again to prevent root rot. Being frost-sensitive, it should be kept safe from freezing temperatures. Indoor cultivation or placing it on a bright windowsill works well in colder climates. Handle with care, as the plant's milky latex sap can irritate skin and eyes, so it's wise to wear gloves and eye protection.
Featuring a single, slender stem that stretches up to 80–150 cm, this plant boasts large, green leaves with distinctive pink bases. As leaves fall, they leave behind intriguing scars on the stem. It blooms with striking red to watermelon-red flowers, making a showy display. This uniqueness, combined with its Madagascar roots and rarity, makes Euphorbia viguieri var. vilanandrensis a standout piece in any succulent collection.
