Commonly known as the Elephant Tree, Bursera fagaroides finds its roots in northwestern Mexico, particularly in Baja California. It also made its way into the desert landscapes of southern Arizona. This succulent isn’t just another pretty plant. Its historical use for medicinal purposes and as a source of copal, a fragrant resin, highlights its cultural significance. The name Bursera honors Joachim Burser, a renowned German botanist, so it carries a touch of botanical history too.
For the best growth, this plant loves full sun and requires well-drained soil. It's very drought-tolerant, but during the growing season, regular watering is a plus once the soil dries out. It can handle light frost, but be cautious. Anything below -3°C (27°F) might cause damage. Keep it above 10° C (50°F) in the winter. Our current batch includes 1-year-old seedlings, perfect for getting started.
With its thick pachycaul trunk and branching limbs, the Elephant Tree really stands out. The trunk shines in grey-green shades, while its fresh stems start off with a purplish-mahogany hue. Expect bright green leaves that glisten in the sunlight. It can grow up to 20 feet tall, making it a commanding centerpiece for any succulent collector. This rare beauty is sure to turn heads in your garden.
