Boswellia dioscoridis is a rare and intriguing succulent native to the island of Socotra, located off the coast of Yemen. This unique environment, combined with the plant's limited range and vulnerability to threats like overharvesting, makes it especially scarce. Its lineage traces back to ancient Greece, likely named in honor of Pedanius Dioscorides, a notable figure in early botanical studies.
Boswellia dioscoridis thrives in well-drained soil and enjoys both full sun and partial shade. It prefers temperatures above 10°C (50°F) to remain healthy. During its growth season, water it once a week, making sure to let the soil dry out between watering. In the winter, when growth slows, cut back to watering about once a month. Be aware that it may shed its leaves in colder months, but this is a natural process, with fresh foliage appearing in the spring.
With its bright green, glossy leaves and peeling resinous bark, Boswellia dioscoridis captures attention. This succulent can reach heights of up to 6 meters in the wild. Its caudex-forming potential and aesthetic, filigreed foliage make it a prized addition for collectors. Its ability to endure harsh conditions adds to its allure, making it a remarkable specimen for those looking to enrich their succulent assortment.
