Adenia spinosa, also known as Spiny Greenstem or Elephant’s Foot, hails from the arid regions of southern Zimbabwe, Botswana, and northern South Africa. These rugged landscapes are its natural playground, where it thrives among rocks in hot, dry conditions. Its rarity is partly due to its limited distribution and the vulnerability of its habitat. The plants that we offer are 1-year-old seedlings, carefully nurtured for collectors.
This plant is drought-tolerant, so you should water it sparingly. Let the soil dry out completely between watering sessions. It prefers bright, indirect light. Use well-draining soil to keep it happy. Ideal temperatures range from 70°F to 85°F. Pay attention to avoid cold and overwatering, which could lead to caudex rot. Propagation is possible with seeds or cuttings, but cuttings won't develop the signature caudex.
Adenia spinosa is a collector’s dream, showcasing a bulbous caudex that can reach up to 1.5 meters in diameter. Topped with thin, spiny branches, it looks almost bonsai-like. The branches double as tendrils, offering climbing potential. Its grey-green leaves and creamy-yellow flowers add to its visual appeal. With its slow growth and dramatic form, this plant isn’t just rare. It’s truly a living sculpture.
