Sterculia colorata, often known as the Scarlet Sterculia or Bonfire Tree, originates from Southeast Asia, with a range extending from Sri Lanka to Vietnam and around India's Western Ghats and Deccan regions. Its natural habitat includes tropical forests, which lend it a stunning and unique character.
Sterculia colorata thrives in bright indirect to full sunlight. It prefers well-draining soil rich in organic matter like a succulent or cactus mix with coco coir and perlite. Water it carefully to allow the soil to dry slightly between watering sessions. During its winter dormancy, keep the soil slightly moist but not soggy, as it is prone to root rot. It enjoys moderate to high humidity and adapts well to a dry dormant season. Repotting should be done every 2-3 years to manage its preference for being root-bound. It flourishes in temperatures above 18°C (64°F) and thrives with monthly diluted liquid fertilizer during the spring.
This plant is a showstopper with its caudex-based structure and large, maple-like lobed leaves. In early spring, the bright bursts of velvety orange to red flowers create a dramatic display on its leafless branches, which not only decorates any space with exotic beauty but also attracts pollinators like bees and birds. Its rare combination of bonsai-esque form and seasonal visual drama makes Sterculia colorata a coveted jewel among plant collectors.
