Sterculia africana thrives in the hot, dry regions of East and Southern Africa, from Sudan all the way to Namibia. This deciduous tree adapts well to dry woodlands and often makes its home on rocky slopes or limestone escarpments. Though widespread, certain subspecies like Sterculia africana subs. socotrana are limited to specific islands and can be quite rare. Historically, people used its resin for cleaning and treating head lice, while also valuing it as livestock fodder.
For Sterculia africana, you'll need well-drained soil and plenty of sunshine. Unlike succulents, it doesn't store water in its leaves, so regular watering is necessary but let it dry completely between waterings. When indoors, or during cold months, keep temperatures above 10° C (50° F). The plant can handle both the heat of full sun and the dry conditions it is used to in its native habitat.
This plant is easy to spot with its unique silvery-grey bark and greenish-yellow flowers that bloom before new leaves emerge. While it’s not rare overall, acquiring specific subspecies due to their limited range can be challenging. Its historical uses and captivating appearance make it a standout in collections, especially for those interested in uncommon arid-region trees.
