Sansevieria kirkii var. Pulchra, also known as the Coppertone Snake Plant, originates from the East African islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Misali, off the coast of Tanzania. This rare variety is found in specialized habitats near sea-level coral cliffs, making its presence limited and prized among plant collectors. It honors Sir John Kirk, a 19th-century surgeon and plant collector in East Africa.
This succulent is adaptable to different light conditions, from low indoor settings to full coastal sun. It does best with bright light exposure, especially if you want it to flower. The soil should be well-draining since it’s sensitive to excess moisture. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. It's drought-tolerant but not frost-hardy, so keep the temperatures above 0-0.5°C (30-32°F) and avoid watering in freezing conditions.
Sansevieria kirkii var. Pulchra stands out with its artistic leaves, featuring thick, flattened textures with wavy edges and spots ranging from whitish-green to reddish. This combination not only makes it visually striking but also adds an exotic touch to any collection. Its ability to produce fragrant, greenish-white flowers in bright light is a sign of a healthy plant. Collectors cherish its rarity and distinctive appearance.
