Dorstenia gigas originates from the remote Socotra Archipelago in Yemen. It thrives on limestone cliffs in arid conditions. This plant is a true survivor, having adapted to cling onto rocky outcrops where its shallow roots excel. Our offering consists of unique 2-year-old seedlings, painstakingly tended to mimick its natural habitat's conditions.
Dorstenia gigas needs a gritty, well-draining soil mix like cactus soil with added pumice or perlite. It thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. Be mindful of leaf scorch in direct sun. Water sparingly in the growing season, ensuring the soil dries completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to minimal moisture. It loves warmth between 21°C and 29°C (70°F and 85°F), but it doesn't like frost, so keep it safe from the cold.
This rare find features a bulbous caudex that stores water, making it a robust survivor. The lance-shaped leaves and distinctive shield-like flowers add to its allure. Its slow growth and sculptural form give it a bonsai-like aesthetic. It's a perfect choice for collectors who appreciate plants as living art. Its rarity and connection to the Socotran cliffs make it a true botanical treasure for any collection.
