Pachypodium lealii, also known as the Bottle Tree, originates from the arid regions of southwestern Angola and northwestern Namibia. The plant naturally inhabits the rocky slopes of the Namib Desert and the Kunene Region. It thrives in stony, open woodlands, often found alongside other succulents and baobabs. It favors well-drained soils like dolomite and granite. The specimens we offer are 1-year-old seedlings.
This succulent loves full sun with at least 8 hours of exposure daily. It's best planted in fast-draining sandy soil, like cactus mix. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, especially during its winter dormancy. Protect it from frost, as it’s hardy only to USDA zones 9-10. It can handle short cold spells but prefers temperatures above 13° C (55° F).
Pachypodium lealii is notable for its sculptural, bottle-shaped trunk that stores water, making it extremely drought-resilient. This slow-growing species can take on various forms, from towering tree-like trunks to stunted, barrel-shaped caudiciforms. It produces clusters of stunning white to pale pink flowers, adding visual interest and making it a standout piece in any xeriscape garden. This plant demands careful light and moisture control, rewarding patience with its unique, striking appearance.
