Fockea edulis is a rare gem from the Cape Provinces and KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. Also found in Namibia's arid zones, this plant is a treasure for any collector due to its scarcity and the unique conditions it requires to grow. Historically, its thick roots served as a food source, showing it can provide more than just visual appeal. The plants we offer are mature imports.
Fockea edulis thrives in partial shade, which protects its large caudex from sunburn. Unlike many succulents, it doesn't need full sun to be happy. Use a fast-draining soil mix with ingredients like coarse sand and perlite. It doesn't need much water, but keep its tuber from shriveling by watering lightly, especially in winter. In terms of temperature, it handles brief frosts down to -2° C (28° F), but generally prefers frost-free environments.
The standout feature of Fockea edulis is its massive, twisted caudex, making it a living sculpture. In its native land, it can grow up to 3 meters in diameter. When indoors, it offers an exotic look with vining stems that can reach up to 4 meters. These vines, coupled with slender green leaves, contribute to its unusual and compelling appearance. It’s a true showstopper in any collection.
