Adenia glauca, affectionately called Elephant’s Foot, originates from the rugged landscapes of southern Africa. This rare succulent finds its natural home on rocky slopes and cliffs in regions of South Africa. The plant is hard to come by due to its slow growth and the challenges it presents in propagation. This scarcity enhances its allure among collectors.
Give your Adenia glauca full sun to partial shade to mimic its natural environment. It thrives in gritty, well-draining, acidic soil. During the growing season, water it thoroughly, but let the soil dry out between waterings. When winter comes, cut back on watering significantly to keep the plant healthy. It prefers temperatures above 10° C (50° F) and does not tolerate frost well. For safety, handle with care since its sap can be toxic.
Adenia glauca is best known for its grayish-green, melon-shaped caudex that adds a distinctive sculptural look to any succulent collection. Its climbing vines showcase blue-tinged leaves and pale yellow-green flowers that bloom during summer. This bonsai-like beauty provides a striking centerpiece and is valued worldwide for its unique appearance and rarity. In native cultures, its tuber has served as an emergency water source, highlighting its adaptability to harsh environments.
