Euphorbia ramena comes from northern Madagascar, near Antisiranana. You'll find it in gritty, well-drained soils, making it a tough contender in harsh environments. What makes this plant stand out is how rare it is in the wild. It was officially described as a species recently in 2015, which adds to its uniqueness.
Euphorbia ramena is a bit different from other succulents because it grows in winter. Give it water during the colder months when it’s actively growing. In the summer, keep it dry since it likes to rest. The soil should be sandy and drain really well to avoid rot. Make sure it gets a lot of sun for best growth. It likes a warmer climate, but don’t water it if the weather goes below 10° C (50° F).
This plant has a thick, woody base, called a caudex, which can reach up to 15 cm in diameter. It gets up to 45 cm tall, with greenish-yellow flowers and unique red-bristled shoots. Its leaves follow a seasonal cycle: old leaves drop in spring and new ones appear in winter. Named after the local word for red, it’s linked to the striking red landscapes where it grows. Euphorbia ramena is a collector’s treasure for its sculptural form and rarity.
