Cyphostemma elephantopus traces its roots to the unique ecosystems of southern Madagascar. This rare succulent stands out due to its impressive caudex, reminiscent of an elephant's foot. Its presence on the island is threatened, making it a sought-after addition to collections around the world.
This plant wants full sun to partial shade. Aim for a balance with the caudex staying shaded while the leaves enjoy the sun. Its roots require a very well-drained soil to prevent rot. Summer is the main growing season, so water it generously but allow the soil to dry between watering. The plant prefers temperatures above 10° C (50° F), thriving best between 18°C and 24°C (64°F and 75°F). In winter, reduce watering significantly to match its dormant period.
The striking visual appeal of the Cyphostemma elephantopus is seen in its swollen base and fleshy green leaves. It's the kind of plant that turns heads, perfect for enthusiasts and collectors. Though challenging to grow, its unique shape can be a spectacular focal point in any garden or as part of a bonsai setup.
