Bursera paradoxa is a rare succulent tree native to Mexico's dry tropical regions. This unique plant thrives in areas that experience distinct dry seasons, adapting beautifully to harsh conditions. Its scarcity in cultivation makes it sought after by collectors of rare Mexican succulents.
Bursera paradoxa loves full, direct sunlight, so position it where it can soak up plenty of rays. Well-draining soil is a must to prevent root rot. Water it moderately, ensuring the soil dries completely between waterings. During the growing season, water thoroughly once a week, but cut back during winter dormancy to just once a month. Keep temperatures above 10°C (50°F) to avoid cold damage. Unlike other succulents, it is normal for it to lose its leaves in winter, regrowing them in spring.
This succulent tree is renowned for its striking appearance, featuring bark that peels away to reveal smooth surfaces beneath and unifoliate leaves that cluster at branch tips. The stark contrast between its silvery-grey branches and lush leaves gives it a sculptural quality that stands out in any collection. While not as noted for aromatic resins as some relatives, its rarity and visual appeal make Bursera paradoxa a fascinating centerpiece for any succulent enthusiast.
