Uncarina grandidieri, also called the Succulent Sesame or Mousetrap Tree, hails from the dry forests and xerophytic thickets of southern and southwestern Madagascar. It's named after Alfred Grandidier, a French naturalist, reflecting its interesting backstory. Due to habitat loss and over-collection, this plant is considered quite rare.
This plant thrives in full to part sun with well-drained soil. It enjoys occasional watering but let the soil dry completely between watering sessions. During its growing season, water about once a week. In winter, when it sheds leaves, water it only once a month. Keep it in temperatures above 13° C (55° F) and protect it from frost.
Uncarina grandidieri is eye-catching with its large yellow flowers featuring purple throats. It also develops unique spiny fruits that resemble natural mousetraps. Although it can grow up to 8 to 12 feet tall, itâs perfect for bonsai culture due to its striking appearance. This plant forms a thick caudex that stores moisture, enabling it to live happily in arid conditions, making it a prized choice for collectors.
