Matelea cyclophylla is a rare deciduous succulent vine from Mexico. It grows in specific environments like the limestone and volcanic cliffs around Tolimán and Jalisco. Its unusual habitat makes it special and highly sought after by plant collectors.
Matelea cyclophylla needs well-drained, porous soil. For best results, give it partial shade to protect its caudex from direct sunlight, while letting the leaves soak up some rays. Water regularly during its active season in spring and summer, but keep it dry in winter to prevent rot. It's frost-hardy to zone 10a, surviving temperatures down to -1.1 °C (30 °F), but keep it above 15 °C (59 °F) if possible. Prune the vining branches that die back in winter for better growth.
This plant stands out with its unique caudex that can reach up to 15 cm, covered in soft, corky tubercles. Its vine may grow nearly 2 meters long, adorned with heart-shaped leaves. Spring and summer bring symmetrical burgundy or brown flowers with a star shape. They emit a scent that draws in fly pollinators, adding to its mystery. Sometimes, it surprises with pure green flowers. After flowering, it develops horn-like seed pods. This vine’s adaptability to tough cliff habitats makes it a collector's gem.
