Euphorbia leistneri finds its home in the subtropical and tropical dry shrublands near the Kunene River, stretching across northwest Namibia and southwest Angola. The plant's native habitat is characterized by scarce rainfall and rugged landscapes, which contribute to its rarity. This specialized environment, coupled with the threat of habitat loss, adds to the plant's exclusivity in the world of succulents.
Euphorbia leistneri is best suited for full sun but appreciates some partial shade. It's used to dry conditions, so keep your watering moderate during the summer and reduce it significantly in winter. This plant thrives in temperatures that mimic its natural habitat, staying comfortable between 20° C and 30° C (68° F and 86° F). Be mindful not to overwater during its dormant winter phase, as this can be detrimental.
This plant doesn’t just blend in with the rest. It stands as a striking multibranched shrub or even a small tree, capable of reaching up to 3 meters tall. The impressive green stems angle outward like bamboo and are adorned with large leaves that show off a light green color with distinctive reddish bases. In summer, its pale green flower structures, known as cyathia, make a compelling display. Its unusual growth and unique foliage colors make Euphorbia leistneri a captivating choice for those looking to push the envelope in their plant collections.
