Euphorbia iharanae is a rare gem from Madagascar, specifically the rocky cliffs near Cap-Manambato in the Iharana district. This critically endangered plant is losing its natural habitat rapidly due to environmental changes. Making it hard to find both in the wild and in cultivation. It was only described scientifically in 1995, which adds to its scarcity and allure for collectors.
Euphorbia iharanae thrives in partial shade, unlike many succulents that crave full sun. It does best in fast-draining soil, ranging from mildly alkaline to slightly acidic. Allow the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings to prevent root rot. Water sparingly during its dormancy period, which occurs in summer. Ideal temperatures range between 18° C and 24° C (64° F and 75° F), and protecting it from extreme heat or cold is key.
The visual appeal of Euphorbia iharanae is undeniable. It develops stout, sharply angled stems with striking terminal rosettes of large, light green leaves marbled with darker shades. These leaves are soft to the touch, adding an extra layer of interest. As it grows, the plant’s stem shifts from a blue-brown hue to a unique gray, making every phase of its growth intriguing. Yellow flowers can appear in winter or spring, adding seasonal beauty. Its rarity and unique aesthetic qualities make it a prized piece for any succulent collection.
