Euphorbia gymnocalycioides is a rare succulent native to the dry, arid lands of southern Ethiopia. It thrives in the Sidamo region, where it grows in shallow limestone soils under sparse shrub cover. The plant's scarcity is due to its limited natural range and specific habitat, threatened by deforestation and expanding agriculture.
This succulent needs bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant color without getting scorched. Use a well-draining soil mix with plenty of grit that mimics its natural limestone habitat. Water sparingly and only when the soil is completely dry. Aim to recreate the arid conditions of its home. Be cautious as it exudes a sticky, toxic latex when its skin is damaged. Keep temperatures above 13° C (55° F) to ensure it stays healthy.
Euphorbia gymnocalycioides is treasured for its unique appearance, with a deep-green, knobby look that resembles cacti. Its resemblance to the Gymnocalycium cacti is purely aesthetic, thanks to convergent evolution. Collectors especially prize the variegated form, which showcases cream or pale-green bases that deepen in color when exposed to sunlight. It's a slow grower, making it a perfect choice for patience-lovers and discerning collectors wishing to add something rare and eye-catching to their collection.
