Dorstenia lavrani, also known as the Tabia Gorge Dorstenia, is native to the rugged landscapes of northern Somalia. Specifically, it grows in the secluded Taba'a Gap area, flourishing in mossy crevices of steep limestone formations. Its limited geographic range adds to its rarity, making this plant a gem for collectors. The name honors John Jacob Lavranos, a noted botanist who made significant contributions to the world of succulents.
Dorstenia lavrani needs careful watering. Give it a good soak during the growing season but ensure the soil dries out completely between waterings. It prefers temperatures above 10°C (50°F), making a warm environment essential. It's frost-sensitive but flourishes in full sun or partial shade. Aim for well-draining soil to keep this plant happy.
This succulent is visually striking with its wax-like stems arranged in a symmetrical grove. Each stem ends in a rosette of crisped leaves, and spiraling rows of whitish leaf scars add to its unique look, like a tiny forest of palm trees. Dorstenia lavrani stands out as the only dioecious species in its genus, requiring both male and female plants for seed production, enhancing its rarity.
