Cyphostemma juttae, also called the Wild Grape or Tree Grape, hails from the dry regions of Southern Africa, particularly Namibia. Although part of the grape family, it is distinct from actual grapevines. Historically, local hunters utilized its properties to poison arrow tips, adding a layer of intrigue to its cultural history.
This plant thrives in direct sunlight and needs warm temperatures above 10° C (50° F). It does best in well-draining soil and requires infrequent watering. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Fertilizing isn't necessary, and should be skipped during the winter months when the plant rests. Be mindful of its sensitivity to cold and let's not go below 10° C (50° F).
Cyphostemma juttae showcases a striking swollen caudex with a peeling papery bark, making it a conversation starter in any collection. The large, fleshy, serrated leaves turn red-purple before they drop in winter, adding a splash of color. While it produces gorgeous pinkish-red grape-like fruits, remember these are ornamental and toxic. Imported mature specimens make this a rare and unique addition, perfect for collectors seeking remarkable plants.
