Boswellia nana is a fascinating succulent from the island of Socotra in Yemen. This rare gem is only found in two small spots on limestone cliffs, and its entire habitat is less than 20 km². It grows in semi-deciduous arid forests, and due to the island’s remote location, this plant remains a true rarity. The seedling being sold is 7 years old.
Boswellia nana thrives with plenty of bright light and fresh air. It mimics its sunny natural habitat, so place it where it gets abundant sunlight. While it can tolerate drought, it prefers moderate watering during the growing season when the soil feels dry. In winter, pull back on the watering and keep the temperature above 10-15°C (50-59°F) to protect it from cold stress. A gritty, well-drained soil works best, and many enjoy its performance in containers as a bonsai or decorative piece.
This plant stands out with its glossy, pinnately divided leaves and eye-catching pink to brownish-red flowers. Its compact, often bonsai-like shape and lime-covered look blend it perfectly into the limestone landscape where it naturally occurs. Known for producing frankincense in other species, this plant’s unique look and care needs draw enthusiasts who love a challenge. Boswellia nana is truly a collector’s prize.
