Pachypodium rutenbergianum is a standout among succulents, found naturally in the unique landscapes of Madagascar. It grows in the island's northwest and southwest regions, inhabiting coastal bushes, scrublands, and savannas. The plant thrives on the rocky grounds of calcareous and granitic soils. This member of the Apocynaceae family was first described by Vatke in 1885.
For optimal health, place your Pachypodium rutenbergianum in bright, indirect sunlight. It prefers well-drained soil to prevent root rot. During the growing season, water it thoroughly once a week, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. In winter, when it rests, reduce watering to once a month. Aim to keep it in temperatures above 10° C (50° F). Be ready for it to shed leaves during winter, which return in spring.
This plant's striking look makes it a collector's favorite. It can grow anywhere from 3 to 8 meters high, crowned with a rosette of long, narrow green leaves. The thick, bottle-shaped trunk adds to its dramatic appeal, setting it apart as an emblem of Madagascarâs diverse flora. During its blooming season, expect clusters of white or pale yellow flowers that add a unique beauty to your collection.
