Operculicarya decaryi, also known as the Madagascar Elephant Tree, is native to the island of Madagascar. It grows in dry, rocky areas like xerophyte thickets and forests, thriving from sea level up to 1000 meters. These environments are tough, making it a robust plant perfectly adapted to arid conditions. The seedlings we offer are 2 years old and ready to bring a slice of Madagascar to your home.
This plant enjoys direct sunlight or partial sun and needs well-draining soil to prevent rot. Water it moderately, ensuring the soil dries out completely between waterings. In its growing season, once a week should be enough, but during winter, you can cut back to once a month, keeping temperatures above 10° C (50° F). It responds well to a light dose of balanced fertilizer, like 15-15-15, during the growing season.
Operculicarya decaryi is a truly unique succulent with thick branches and small, leathery leaves, giving it the look of a mini tree. It may grow up to 20 to 50 feet in its natural habitat. Tiny flowers appear during the warm months, adding to its charm. Its rarity and distinct appearance make it a highly sought-after plant for collectors seeking something truly special.
