Fouquieria macdougalii, also known as the Mexican Tree Ocotillo, comes from the Sonoran Desert in Mexico. It's typically found around Hermosillo and southeastern Sonora. In the wild, it grows into a small tree or large shrub, reaching 5 to 20 feet tall, but stays smaller when grown in containers. The plant's fast growth and unique habitat make it a rare find outside its native region.
This plant loves full sun and well-draining soil. It’s a tough survivor, doing well with minimal to moderate watering. Once it's established, it handles drought like a pro. Keep watering light during winter to prevent leaf drop since it likes a dry rest period. It can handle mild frost down to -4°C (25°F) but benefits from some protection in cooler climates. Treat it more like a shrub when watering during its active growing season but ensure the soil dries out in winter.
The Mexican Tree Ocotillo isn't just rare. It’s visually striking with its architectural form. Its upright, spiny branches come from a thick trunk, offering a dramatic look that landscapers love. During summer, bright red tubular flowers bloom in clusters, drawing in hummingbirds and butterflies. Its green foliage is a bit fuzzy and glaucous, adding a fresh texture. Besides, it's resistant to deer and snakes, which is a bonus for outdoor gardens.
