Ficus burkei is native to the vast savannas and woodlands of Southern Africa. You’ll find it naturally thriving from South Africa all the way to East Africa, including regions like Mozambique and Kenya. It often grows on rocky slopes and even termite mounds, showcasing just how tough and adaptable it is. Named after Joseph Burke, a 19th-century naturalist, this plant holds both historical and ecological value. Our offerings are 2 years old seedlings cultivated with care.
While Ficus burkei is not a true succulent, it shares some resilience traits, making it a unique addition to your plant collection. This plant requires regular watering when young and prefers full sun to partial shade. Ensure it gets enough light for robust growth. As it matures, it becomes more drought-tolerant but remains sensitive to frost. Aim to keep it in temperatures above 18°C (64°F). Use deep, well-draining soil and allow it to dry out a bit between waterings, particularly in its slower growth phase during winter.
Ficus burkei captivates with its sculptural presence. Its smooth gray bark and dense evergreen foliage create a striking visual. Initially a slow grower, mature specimens develop a widespread crown and intricate aerial roots. Beyond its beauty, it attracts diverse wildlife, from birds like the African Green Pigeon to the Fig-tree Blue butterfly. Its adaptability for bonsai or xeric-themed gardens makes it a distinctive choice for plant enthusiasts.
