Euphorbia retrospina naturally comes from the dry shrublands of Madagascar. Specifically, it originates from regions like the Angavo mountains and Antanimora, areas known for their arid conditions. This plant’s limited geographical range is a key factor in its rarity and desirability among succulent enthusiasts. The plants we offer are healthy 2 years old seedlings.
This succulent thrives under bright, direct sunlight, enjoying temperatures above 13° C (55° F). It prefers well-draining gritty soil and requires sparing water practices—only when the soil is completely dry. During winter dormancy, reduce watering to once a month and protect it from frost and high humidity. Handle with care because its sap is toxic to skin and eyes.
Euphorbia retrospina is prized for its unique, sculptural form and striking spiny appearance. Its evolutionary adaptations allow it to store water efficiently, making it extremely drought-resistant. The plant’s rarity due to its niche habitat underlines its value in collections aimed at preserving unique and endangered species. There is a special caution on ethical sourcing, given its vulnerable status.
