Bursera simaruba, known as the Gumbo Limbo, is native to the tropical regions of the West Indies, Central America, and southern Florida. This adaptable tree thrives in coastal hammocks and seasonally dry tropical forests, making it a sturdy choice for various landscapes. The seedlings we offer are 2 years old, poised to bring a touch of the tropics to your garden.
Gumbo Limbo loves full sun or partial shade and flourishes in well-draining soils. It is incredibly drought-tolerant, surviving in tough conditions, but occasional watering helps it thrive. This tree can handle moderate salt spray, making it a good option for coastal gardens. While it prefers warmer climates, ensure it stays above 10°C (50°F) to maintain its health.
This tree is known for its shiny, red, peeling bark, often likened to sunburned skin, giving it the charming nickname 'tourist tree'. Its irregular, open canopy and small, red fruits make it a striking feature in any landscape. Birds are often attracted to its fruits, adding a lively element to gardens. Though not rare, its distinctive look and adaptability make it an appealing choice for those seeking something unique.
