Gerrardanthus macrorhizus, also known as the elephant's foot plant, is originally from South Africa and southern Mozambique. It thrives in rocky and arid zones, adapting well to cultivation in other environments. Our available plants are 2-year-old seedlings, ready to become the centerpiece of your collection.
This plant prefers partial shade for the caudex to avoid scorching, while its vines can handle full sun. Use a fast-draining soil mix with plenty of pumice, as overwatering can cause the caudex to rot. Water weekly during its growing season and reduce watering when it's dormant. It likes temperatures to stay above 10°C (50°F) but can handle brief drops to the mid-30s°F. Keep it safe from frost.
The Gerrardanthus macrorhizus features an eye-catching swollen caudex that resembles an elephant’s foot, with climbing vines that boast palmate leaves and golden-yellow flowers. Its rarity comes from needing separate male and female plants for seeds, and it's not widely available. This makes it a valued gem for succulent enthusiasts seeking something uniquely sculptural and rare.
