Commiphora virgata calls the arid, rocky regions of western Namibia and southwestern Angola its home. In these harsh desert scrublands, it stands resilient among drought-tolerant plants like Portulacaria carrissoana. While it may be locally common, in horticulture circles it's a rare find due to its specific growing needs and limited distribution.
Commiphora virgata thrives in full sun with coarse, well-draining soil. Water it sparingly and only during its active growth phase. This plant prefers complete dryness when dormant, so cut back on watering in those periods. It likes temperatures to stay above 10°C (50°F) in winter. Take note of its photoperiod sensitivity; it may not leaf out if in natural dormancy even if given water.
This plant is prized for its thick, swollen trunk with smooth, pale, and peeling bark. Its trifoliate leaves and bright red fruits pop against the photosynthetic bark. Adding to its charm, Commiphora virgata emits a sweet resinous fragrance akin to green apples. Its potential as a bonsai is exceptional due to the sculptural trunk and the dynamic exfoliating bark, an adaptation to long droughts. Our offerings are 1-year-old seedlings waiting to enrich your collection or sensory garden.
